Can anyone who is well familiar with Samal Island comment on what it is like living on the island as an expat? Are there tidal surges due to bad storms, which would caution against having a house too close to the eastern shoreline? Are there any significant safety issues?

Davao is not in the typhoon path, the very reason why banana is the major agricultural export. No serious storm has ever hit the area and the water is generally very calm.
Samal Island is a paradise and Davao City, the most livable city in the Philippines is only 15 min away by pump boat. Lucky you!
