Article: Feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila

Thank author of this post/commentFilipinos are religious people. That's one thing for sure. Despite the advancements and progress that you will see in the metro and elsewhere, Filipino values are still deeply rooted in Catholic virtues. To this extent, the Philippines remains to be an oddball in Asia, for it is the only country (aside from little East Timor) that is largely Christian and Roman Catholic.

I have to agree with what most people, specifically devoted Christians (not Catholics) to stop these kinds of traditions. I have seen news feature about this feast and I can say that it is a total waste of effort and life. There have been a good number of people who have lost their lives or got injured in the stampede of people who just want to touch a moving black wood shaped liked a man who is also in questioned if this is really the face of Christ.

Protestants and non-Catholic Christians knows better and they believe that these forms of devotion to such graven images are sin in the eyes of God, according to the Bible. But the Catholics usually beg to differ and they say that it is just a "representation". I say if you got hurt or die in the effort of just touching a mere representation, then I sa it is idolatry.

The Filipinos' strong adherence to their Catholic religion and values make it possible for them to rise above any and all adversities that come to them. No problem is bigger than their faith in God. This also makes them naturally happy people. Some people may laugh at the way they pay respect to the statues of Jesus the Nazarene, Mother Mary and the other saints but that't their brand of faith so we just have to respect it.

We cannot just say that other people who belongs to other religions knows better than the Catholics. For we all have our own faith and beliefs.

But true, there had been lots of lives that ended with the feast of the Black Nazarene. And I also hope that devotees and believers find some other ways to celebrate such important event in relation to their religious beliefs. For believing into God does not mean compromising your very own life.

the feast of the black nazarene is swarmed by people every year because of the strong religious background of the Filipinos. they uphold this activity because of the culture that they grew up with. even if accidents happen because of stampede the feast is still embraced by the people. there are testimonials that tells that the black nazarene changed their lives for the better. In manila they are deeply religious.

It is a shame that an object of worship can become an object of destruction due to people's fear and selfishness. If people have been changed by this image, it is due to their belief in the power behind it, and not the image itself. Nothing that causes death and lack of love can be good in itself, even if it was originally intended for good and to inspire faith in God.
