Retirement in Philippines Retirement, Philippines
Edward from Atlanta, Georgia -
While all countries have their pros and cons regarding retirement, the Philippines arguably has far more cons. It's necessary to know the people and the nation's history in order to understand why things are so screwed up in this archipelago of 7, 107 islands. Infrastructure is extremely poor and while foreign currency goes very far, the retiree can expect shortages of practically everything. It is not a good place for retirees with families and wives generally find conditions intolerable. Everyday life, even with domestic help, is a constant struggle for mobility, provisions, power, and competent services. The government is extremely bureaucratic and getting even simplest tasks done can be a nightmare as the pecking order in Filipino society is second to none in Asia. Philippines is a very poor area which makes retirement there very inexpensive, but at what cost? Do you really want to retire in the Philippines without the wonderful accomodations of the United States. I think I would look around for a different destination to retire. Thanks Edward for the wonderful information. I totally agree with you.

I agree as well. A lot of people who retire in Costa Rica realize the same things. People tend to envision something wonderful where it's hot all the time... Paradise! but people seem to forget that people live very, very, very differently in other countries, and you would have to learn and struggle to adjust and give up on many luxuries that you grew up with.
