My suggestion would be either Laos or Malaysia. I just figure they have better accomodations and technology is more advanced in those areas.

Comment #2 Edward from Atlanta, Georgia - 12/01/06 17:27

I noticed that in Vietnam they have high speed dsl (2 megabit download 500 upload) for about $60/mo.

Comment #3 COIN-OPERATED-BOY from Philippines - 01/07/08 02:34

I suggest you retire in the Philippines.

Lots of opportunities and activities to do in this country. You can enjoy your retirement more if you're here in the Philippines. Also, there are lots of expat communities where you can join.

What is the cost of living in the P.I.

Comment #5 Sherry Ballester from Pasig City, Philippines - 02/07/08 15:48

I suggest that you retire in the Philippines, not because I am a Filipino but because it is really nice here.

You can live in the metro (bustling cities) or in the provinces where you can enjoy the sceneries. Cost of living in the Philippines is relatively low. Almost everything is available, from imported goods to delicious delicacies, malls and restaurants and nice beaches.

Plus, the people are very hospitable and friendly. But don't easily trust anyone. The Filipinos are good people but like other countries, there are exemptions.

But I suggest that you take a week-long vacation first. Explore! Then, decide if you'll like the place.

Philippines now offering the most attractive Permanent Visa, Retirement facilities that are also run by Japanese who already resident here. The said Permanent Resident Visa is for all foreign nationals who wish to retire, invest, long stay and reside here. The largest community of retiree's here now in the Philippines are the Japanese, next to Korean and the rest of European. Why consider Philippines....I could connect you to the Japanese community here to know the reason why in your own language.

Suggest...if you plan to reside or retire here...secure first the proper visa...before engaging yourself into buying your property..... check out our SRRVisa(Philippine Retirement Authority) SRRVisa - Special Retirement Resident Visa... easy procedure and requirements and hassle free.

I work for the Philippine Retirement Inc, a non-profit organization committed to helping the Philippines become the premier retirement haven in Asia. As the private partner of the government, We have contributed much in developing retirement programs for retirees. We have identified 3 major components in designing a retirement communities namely Housing, Healthcare and Leisure. Thus you can be sure that your retirement in the country will be smooth and hassle free. Permanent retirement visas are also offered by the Philippine government.

I can also help you identify the best location to retire depending on your needs and preferences. No fees are involved (as I mentioned, PRI is a non profit org). Send me an email for more info.

Is one obligated to file tax returns and pay income tax in the Philippines on income earned or investments outside of the Philippines?

Comment #11 Liza Garcia from Makati, Philippines - 03/04/08 18:41

Only earned income in the Philippines that is taxable.

Comment #12 Edward from Atlanta, Georgia - 03/05/08 18:18

"Resident citizens are taxed on worldwide income; resident aliens and non-residents pay tax only on Philippine-source income."

I see... you are "punished" for being a citizen, but not a resident!

I think Mr Atchan Watanabe's choose is leaned more on choosing Philippines as his retiring destination. And if you are looking for a place to stay at, I would suggest Parañaque City. It's in the of the bustling metro and near to international airports, and pretty nice place too.

Comment #15 blu_zapphyre from las pinas city philippines - 05/20/09 09:28

yes Philippines is one of the best place for retiring.. and also Paranaque is one good city to live.. You can also try to live here in Las Pinas City, it is beside Paranaque City...

But if you feel like buying a lot somewhere in a remote place with breathtaking scenery and white beaches, i have something for you. Just check on my link and you will see it.. You can email me too (blu_zapphyre@yahoo.com)

Welcome to Philippines!!!

Comment #20 Wolfgang Milde (92.77.64.40) - 07/14/09 06:14

I'm a German and would like to retire in the Philippines. I would like to get the SSRVisum during/ahead of immigration to the Phil. - so it would be much more easy but i wonder you have to present (it says on the homepage of the 'Philippines Retirement Authority) already that your Pension flows already (always to the Country - and the same time a Police clearance from Germany. That impossible because the Pension will be send only to the Philippines when you don't have anymore a registration of an adress in Germany. If you would do so to turn down any adress (living place) in Germany in order that the pension will be send to the Philippines you can not at the same time receive a police clearance from germany because you are not listed ij the country anymore. So there is a logical mistake to ask already for a proof that the pension is remitted to the Phil.-while you apply for SSRVisum. How will it function?

Is there really a need to proof that it flows already to the Phil.? Is it not enough to have a proof (authorized from the Phil Embassy in germany) that you receive the Pension in Germany???

"Mr. Atchan Watanabe"

I'm sure you have already made a list of things you want in a retirement home.

No 1 is security. Philippines is very secure in most parts if proper precautions are taken.

No 2 You can communicate with many Filipinos as they speak english as do you.

No 3 Medical is very good in most areas of PI if you are located near a large metro area. Medicine in the provinces is lacking for serious problems that might arise. Medical treatment in PI is very affordable compared to US prices. Caregivers in PI are some, if not the best in the world.

No 4 Cost of living in PI is very low, primarily because of low wages for labor force which is generally well educated.

Negatives: Gohan is not served in any of the eating establishments that I have been to although I'm pretty sure it is available in the stores. There may be a few other food items that may be hard to come by but for the most part Japanese food can be prepared with local ingredients.

Come and visit for 3 weeks if possible and see how you like it. If you like cities Cebu is a nice place, if smaller less congested might I suggest Dumaguete as that is where I plan on retiring in a couple of years.
