As usual there are scams in every country where people try to trick Americans into paying too much and whatnot. I was wondering if anybody had any pointers or tips on what to watch out for brand new travellers?

Just make sure you keep your wallet in a pocket that has a button on it, or keep your cash in a hidden spot, not your pocket. Keep everything electronic or of value locked up in your room. Just be very careful and you should be ok. I don't think the crime is that bad there.

I think many people would suggest carrying travelers checks. And, you may want to know where the nearest western union is, or something similar to it just in case. You can never be too prepared when it comes to international vacationing.

I heard that some places do not accept travellers checks so it's better to use a credit card? Does anybody know if any islands in the Philippines do not accept travellers checks or at least are not fond of it?

Hi Joker, I was not aware of any places not accepting travelers checks. I would figure credit cards would be find. Just be very careful not to lose them or fall to a pickpocket. You can always pay in peso. I would be sure that many love to see the American Dollar since it is worth much more.

If you are going to visit our country, then you must be ready for whole lot of experience. It is a very diverse archipelago, mixed culture and a lot of attractions.
I just to give you a tip that whenever you go to a certain place in the Philippines and you don't know the way, don't just ask anybody, better ask those in uniform such as policemen or security guards, or those who you think can be trusted enough.
And big island resorts in the country accepts travelers check, but it would be most likely if you have a credit card. Don't bring a lot of hard cash, avoid being the eyecandy for thiefs. anyway, there are lots of cops and cctv cams everywhere, so need not to worry.

i suggest that if you bring cash make sure that you have them in many denominations such as 20s, 50s and 100s. There are taxicabs who would pretend that they dont have change so you'll be obliged to just let them keep the change.hehe!make an itinerary of where you're going and maybe you can get assistance from your hotel to give you an idea on how much are the transportion fare going to a certain place.
But I think the best thing to do if you are a traveller and would like to tour the country is to get in touch with a travel agency who offers packaged tours. They will tour you to the best places in the Philippines complete with a tour guide that explains all the scenic spots here in our country. Please search the blog of carlos celdran as he gives informative tours in manila. :)
